PDC composite drill bit is the abbreviation for Polycrystalline Diamond Composite (PDC) drill bit, which is composed of polycrystalline diamond cutting blocks embedded or sintered into the drill bit body. It is mainly used for drilling operations in soft to medium hard formations. Its cutting teeth achieve efficient rock breaking through diamond composite sheets, and in the mid to late 20th century, it gradually gained attention due to the problem of mud inclusion in plastic rock layers caused by roller drill bits.
In the early stages of drilling, roller bits were limited by the phenomenon of mud inclusion, which prompted the industry to try to combine the characteristics of scraper bits and roller bits. With the improvement of PDC cutting technology, fixed cutting teeth PDC bits are gradually replacing roller bits, but there are still performance bottlenecks in hard formations.
Features:
1.Efficient rock breaking: In soft-to-medium hard formations (such as mudstone, sandstone, and shale), the mechanical drilling rate (ROP) is 2-5 times higher than that of a three-cone bit, making it particularly suitable for long sections of horizontal shale gas wells.
2. Long service life: The composite segments have excellent wear resistance, and a single drill bit can advance up to several thousand meters (for example, in shale gas wells, the advance distance can exceed 5,000 meters), reducing the number of drilling operations.
3. Low vibration and low noise: Rotational cutting is more stable than toothed-wheel impact, which can reduce the risk of drill bit fatigue damage and is suitable for precise trajectory control in directional wells and horizontal wells.
4. Cost Advantage: Although the single unit price is higher than that of a three-cone drill bit, due to the greater drilling depth and higher efficiency, the overall drilling cost can be reduced by 30% to 50%.
